–       Apogee Corp. of London, England, which acquired the printer/MFP business of Sagemcom of France last year, announced it acquired Xact Complete Solutions, a Xerox dealer in England.

–       3D Systems, maker of 3D printers, announced it raised $317 million from investors, which it plans to use on acquisitions.

 

–       Hewlett Packard announced that a 60,000 square foot building it abandoned in Boise, Idaho is now leased by DataSite, which will open a data center.

 

–       HP announced it sold three T260 production b/w inkjet presses to Hucais Printing Company Limited of China, for on-demand book production.

 

–       HP’s new OfficeJet Enterprise X585z, a color MFP designed to compete with laser, was reviewed by InfoTrends. Commentary made by analysts about the color inkjet output:

o   “You can see how it’s kind of saturated and bubbly”

o   “There’s a little bit of curling”

o   “I call it the Monet effect, they (samples) look nice from far away but once you get close they are pixelated and there’s gradation”

o   “I think the print quality was very good for documents but not great for images, very saturated”

–       Catholic Health Initiatives, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, which controls 89 hospitals in 18 states, announced it would spend $2.2 billion for a systemwide EHR.

 

–       The State of Maryland announced it will spend up to $50 million to create an Obamacare website, by modifying one that the State of Connecticut is using.

o   The state of Maryland had awarded a $170 million contract to Noridian Healthcare Solutions for a website that failed upon launch.

 

–       Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber announced he will sue Oracle, hoping to recover the $134 million paid to develop an Obamacare website for the state which failed.

 

–       The MGMA (Medical Group Management Association) published results of survey of independent physician practices regarding Obamacare

o   62% are struggling to identify patients who claim they are covered by Obamacare and verify their eligibility

o   Most say that their patients who have Obamacare are surprised to find out that their deductibles are high

o   50% say they can’t provide services to Obamacare patients because their practice is outside of the network

 

–       The president-elect of the Kansas Medical Society gave his views of usage of EHRs:

o   “Now, we’re basically key-punch operators, transcriptionists having to input the data ourselves. Voice-recognition software and some of those things help, but is has essentially tripled the time to complete a medical record. How do you accomplish that when we are already working 12-14 hours a day?”

 

–       HIPAA/Data Security Breach News:

o   Ponemon Institute published results of study that shows that computer hackers have exposed the personal information of 110 million Americans, roughly half the nation’s adults, in the last 12 months.

o   BitSight Technology reports that PHI record sells for $20/record on the black market.

o   Sutherland Healthcare of Los Angeles, CA notified 3,497 patients that their PHI was exposed after computers were stolen.

o   The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center says it now believes that all 62,000 employees have had their PHI access by hackers.

o   Hurley Medical Center of Flint, Michigan announced that it inadvertently emailed out PHI of an unspecified number of employees.

o   The Associated Press reported that when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn closed 3 healthcare facilities in 2012, that file cabinets and boxes full of paper medical records of past patients. The PHI for unspecified number of people was found at facilities in Tinley Park, Rockford and Jacksonville.

o   The VA Hospital in Denver, CO notified 239 patients that their PHI was exposed after a laptop computer was stolen from its pulmonary lab.

o   Elliott Hospital of Manchester, New Hampshire notified 1200 patients that their PHI was exposed after 4 computers were stolen from an employee’s car.
