–       Samsung under scrutiny. The Protector of Health and Human Rights of Semiconductor Workers announced that Lee Beom-woo, 47, died from leukemia, caused by working in a Samsung factory in Onyang, South Korea.

o   “Samsung’s semiconductor production line in Onyang is a place where hazardous factors linked to leukemia, such as epoxy resin and radiation machineries”

o   “Our research shows there were 150 cases of environment related diseases at Samsung facilities.”

 

–       Ricoh announced it sold an InfoPrint 5000 production color inkjet press to Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield’s CRD in Rochester, NY.

 

–       Ricoh announced it place a Pro C901 production color system at Plum Grove, a commercial printer in Hoffman Estates, IL.

 

–       Ricoh announced it is the official document services provider of the Kansas City Chiefs football team of the National Football League (NFL). :

o   Bob Stirton, Director of IT for the Chiefs said, “They sit down with us quarterly, review metrics and discuss ideas to help us improve performance in many ways. They also show up several hours early on game day to provide support for some very busy machines sprinkled throughout Arrowhead Stadium.’”

o   Working with the coaching staff, Ricoh provides full-color copies of playbooks in addition to the digital iPad playbooks they use.

o   They also work the media in the press box to provide printouts of the play-by-play statistics after each quarter of play is concluded.

o   Other people in the Chiefs organization get printed copies of food orders, receipts, ticket summaries, and other reports.

o   All of these tasks are handled by a fleet that includes over 150 office printers, multifunction products, and production-level printers.

o   Ricoh has also aided the Chiefs in improving internal workflow by assisting in the upgrade of their intranet including the latest version of Microsoft SharePoint.

o   Ricoh will incorporate a new automated travel-and-expense workflow system that will make it easier to submit receipts and get approvals.

o   Ricoh will incorporate an accounts payable workflow which will also save time and money and generate better cash flow.

o   As part of the contract, Ricoh provides the Chiefs with frequent usage analytics which are used to further optimize and improve information workflows.

–       Lexmark announced it won a managed print services contract from Oklahoma City Public Schools:

o   Cut paper usage by 25%

 

–       Lexmark announced that it is the official imaging and printing solutions provider for the PGA of America, and supplied 90 pieces of equipment for the 2014 PGA Championship held at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.

 

–       Lexmark and Hyland Software both upped their offers again, as both battle to buy Readsoft Software of Sweden, to gain its OCR and document capture technology. The purchase price is now nearing $250 million.

 

–       Makerbot, a manufacturer of 3D printers, announced it has acquired Hafner Buro (a reseller) of Germany, to grow its sales in Europe.

 

–       EMC, which makes Documentum ECM solutions, has had some of its stock purchased by Elliott Management, which wants the company to split up as it believes its parts are worth more than the combined company, according to Wall Street Journal

 

–       DocuWare announced it won a document management solution contract from Smart Choice, a national network of 3,400 insurance agents, headquartered in Greensboro, NC.

 

–       RJ Young, a large multi-location Canon dealer in the southeastern U.S., announced it now offers PrintReleaf Exchange(PRX):

o   MFPs and printers transmit device and fleet data to PRX

o   Integrates with Global Forest Watch

o   Shows customers their paper consumption, and customer then assist in planting new trees to make up for those used in the paper consumption

o   After selecting where they want the trees planted, customers can use their online portal to track their growth

 

–       Altodigital published results of study:

o   5% of business owners believe they will be paper free in 5 years

  • 11% believe they will be paper free in 10 years
  • 76% believe that the printed page would remain mission critical to their business operations

o   46% do not track printing costs

  • 51% do not track paper usage

o   90% admit to storing documents both electronically and in hard copy form

  • 40% choose to store document electronically only
  • 45% prefer convenience of paper over electronic
  • 30% do not trust storing documents only electronically

o   19% believe that going paperless if too complicated and too expensive

o   15% admit to have a “print it out” culture across enterprise

o   73% already have some type of managed print service

–       Data security consultant, Deral Heiland, claims that some MFPs allow hackers to gain access to corporate networks through the MFPs network connection:

o   Claims that hackers can use a LDAP pass-back attached

o   Able to gain access to corporate active directory credentials

o   Access usernames, email addresses and passwords

o   “was able to access the payroll database for 4000 staff through a human resources printer that was not isolated”

 

–       During the Black Hat data security conference in Las Vegas, Karsten Nohl and Jakob Lell presented information on a new malware called “BadUSB”:

o   Allows an USB device (thumb drives, keyboards, mouse, smartphone, etc.) to invisibly hijack a PC and redirect a user’s internet traffic and/or keystrokes

o   The malware embeds itself in the firmware of the USB device

 

–       PricewaterhouseCoopers released results of survey of businesses in the financial services vertical:

o   Only 10-15% digital adoption of documents

o   45% of customers still write some paper checks each month

  • 19% write checks for bills that could be handled electronically
  • 63% go to multiple places each month to pay bills
  • 27% going to 4 or more places

o   Financial services industry spends $20 billion each year on printing and distributing paper

 

–       OpenText announced it won an ECM solution contract from the California Public Utilities Commmission.

 

 

 

–       The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) announced it is launching a professional organization for CISOs (chief information security officers of hospitals), due to the increasing amount of hospitals creating the CISO position, and the increasing risk of HIPAA violations.

 

–       Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released reports on EHRs:

o   66% of hospitals have received federal HITECH stimulus funds to help pay for the EHRs, but few of them can meet the new Meaningful Use Stage 2 criteria

o   59% of hospitals are using at least a basic EHR

o   26% of hospitals have a comprehensive EHR

 

–       Doctor on Demand Inc. raised $21 million in investment. Details:

–       Siemens of Germany announced it is sell of its healthcare software division to Cerner for $1.3 billion in cash:

o   This division makes the Soarian EHR platform

o   Siemens started the division when it acquired Shared Medical Systems in 2000 for $2.1 billion

 

–       HIPAA/Data Security Breach news:

o   Riverside Health System of Newport News, VA notified 2,000 patients that their PHI (personal health information) was exposed after a former employee illegally accessed the info with intent to sell on black market.

o   Indian Health Services of Rapid City, South Dakota notified 620 patients that their PHI was exposed when an employee mistakenly left a folder with paper records in a public area.

o   Mandi Wilson of Missouri filed a complaint after a security guard at Mercy Hospital barred her from taking a picture of her son, while he had his hearing checked, out of HIPAA violation fears.

o   Joshua Hippler, a former employee of a Texas hospital, was arrested and charged by federal prosecutors for intentionally accessing and disclosing PHI of patients.

o   Urological Associates of South Arizona notified more than 3000 patients that their PHI was exposed when urine sample cups were thrown in the trash without having labels removed that had the confidential patient info.

o   Eric Hausman of Target Corp., stated that the December 2013 data breach will have a total cost to the company of $236 million.

o   According to Hold Security Inc. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a Russian cyber gang, known as CyberVor, has breached over 420,000 websites to pilfer over 1.2 billion credentials.

o   Mozilla Developer Network, maker of the Firefox browser, notified 76,000 users that their passwords were exposed accidentally.

o   The Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island notified 12,127 patients that their PHI was exposed after 19 computer backup tapes were lost.

o   P.F. Chang’s Inc. announced that 33 of its restaurants were hacked to steal customer debit and credit card info.
