  • HP announced it sold Indigo 7800 production color digital presses to:
    • Two systems to ANRO Inc. of West Chester, PA to print onto synthetic substances
    • ProCo, a commercial printer in Sheffield, England
  • HP announced it sold an Indigo 7600 production color system to Entwhistle Group, a commercial printer in Manchester, England.

 

  • HP launched a new programs for commercial printers to service their Indigo presses:
    • HP Predictive Press Care provides early, information-rich alerts, for preemptive repairs and maintenance
    • HP Visual Remote Guidance provide real-time audio and visually guided support from a remote HP engineer using wearable technology

 

  • HP announced it will partner with Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA), maker of offset presses, to develop a new roll-to-roll production color inkjet system.

 

  • HP has to pay out $1.35 million in attorney fees, according to U.S. District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel, for a case brought against HP, that was settled, claiming that HP misled consumers about how much ink they would have to buy to operate HP printers.

 

  • HP announced that its new OfficeJet 8040 desktop color inkjet MFP will include NEAT, a scan to cloud OCR document capture solution for the home office market.
    • The printer will sell for $399, and include a 36 month NEAT subscription for one user.

 

  • HP’s Dion Weisler, EVP of Printing, stated that the company will launch a new TV ad campaign to boost printer/MFP sales:

  • HP, according to report in Wall Street Journal, is going to split up into 2 companies:
    • PC and printer/MFP business would be a separate company
    • Enterprise and services business would be other separate company
    • Meg Whitman, current CEO, will be the chairwoman of the PC/Printer/MFP company and CEO of the Enterprise/Services company
    • Dion Weisler, current HP exec, would be CEO of the PC/Printer/MFP company
    • Patrick Moorhead, analyst with Moor Insights and Strategy, stated; “The two smaller companies will have less negotiating power than the combined HP does now.”

 

  • Xerox announced that 9 individuals pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Frank Geraci, to mail fraud and money laundering conspiracy, when they were caught billing Xerox for forklift parts and repairs that were never done for equipment used by Xerox in Webster, NY.
    • The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison

 

  • Xerox announced it sold an iGen 150 production color system to Irongate, a commercial printer in England, to produce personalized photo products.

 

 

  • Xerox’s CIO, Stephen Little, gave out details of the company’s use of Oracle as its ERP:
    • Attempting to simplify Xerox’s current infrastructure
    • Trying to standardize technology platforms for its 144,000 employees
    • Currently has 1,300 business applications in use
    • Attempting to have a common compensation system, as it currently spends $7 billion per year on compensation
      • “even taking 1% out of the costs could save a tremendous amount of money”

  • Xerox’s Global Marketing Manager, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, made following comments in interview with CRN magazine:
    • The printer market is only expected to grow 2.6% CAGR (cumulative annual growth rate) through 2018
    • Black/white devices comprise 75% of shipments and will drop to 70% by 2018

  • Toshiba announced it has begun production of vegetables at its new plant factory in Yokosuka, Japan, to produce leaf lettuce, baby leaf greens, spinach, mizuna and herbs.

 

  • Epson announced it will become a member of The Managed Print Services Association.

 

  • Mas Por Mas Inc. of Mexico announced it created a paper towel dispenser for public restrooms that will print out the latest news as customers use the device.
    • The towel dispenser uses a special type of dry ink to print the black text

 

  • The United States Postal Office in Brooklyn, NY temporarily stopped delivering mail, when postal workers complained that some of the mailboxes were too low to the ground, complaining that bending down may cause injury.
    • The USPS rescinded the stoppage, and stated that the incident was caused by “over enthusiastic” enforcement of regulations.

 

  • MWAi of Scottsdale, AZ announced it won a FORZA SAP Business One ERP solution software contract from Des Plaines Office Equipment to run the dealership’s business.

  • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid announced that it has received 44,000 hardship exemption requests from healthcare providers who indicated they would have problems proving meaningful use of EHRs in 2015.

 

  • Judy Murphy, Chief Nursing Officer in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (fed gov agency) announced that penalties for healthcare providers who do not demonstrate meaningful use of EHRs will begin in 2015:
    • “Over time, the penalties could yield savings to the federal government of up to $6 billion”
    • The American Hospital Association is warning hospitals that if they do not meet meaningful use by 10/1/2014, they could be subject to significant payment penalties under Medicare and lose promised incentives.

    • California governor, Jerry Brown, signed a new law, making the state the first to require credit monitoring services be provided following a data breach.
    • Flowers Hospital of Alabama announced a former lab technician was indicted for stealing PHI in a tax fraud scheme.
    • American Family Care, which operates clinics in Alabama, Florida, Georgia & Tennessee, notified 2500 patients that their PHI was exposed when 2 laptop computers were stolen from an employee’s car.
    • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of CA revised the total from 500 to 33,000 patients that were affected when their PHI was exposed after a laptop computer was stolen.
    • Dental technician, Margarita Palestino, was fired for exposing to the press that actor Charlie Sheen was admitted to the dental clinic for an abscessed tooth.
    • Virginia Nguyen, a med student at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA, was arrested for stealing the Apple iPad that belonged to patient that died.
    • “As attackers discover new methods to make money, the healthcare industry is becoming a much riper target because of the ability to sell large batches of personal data for profit; stated Dave Kennedy, CEO of TrustedSEC LLC.
      • “Hospitals have low security, so it’s relatively easy for these hackers to get a large amount of personal data for medical fraud.”
      • PHI is worth 10 times more than credit card number on the black market.
    • Ponemon Institute published results of survey regarding the top barriers to improving data security and response to data breaches:
      • 56% = lack of visibility into end user access into sensitive info
      • 43% = proliferation of mobile devices and cloud services
