  • Marco, a dealer headquartered in Minnesota, announced that two of its employees, Clay Ostlund and Nick Thompson, completed their Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification in Brussels, Belgium

  • Canon, according to Brian Dollard, Canon’s Director of Marketing, when asked when Canon dealers will be able to sell the new “Niagara” production color inkjet system, apparently stated; “Two years after it is introduced.” (This implies that only Canon branches will sell product for first 24 months)

 

  • South Korean police, at the request of Samsung executives, raided the office of CEO Jo Seong-Jin, who runs LG Electronics, a major competitor to Samsung:
    • The request for a raid, was in response to Jo Seong-Jin and fellow employees supposedly vandalizing a Samsung display at the recent IFA2014 trade show in Berlin, Germany.
    • “We regret today’s raid by prosecutors. Our company – a global company – was raided as a result of a rival’s unilateral and excessive claims, and we are concerned that this would seriously undermine our corporate activities and external credibility.”; stated an LG spokesperson.

 

 

 

  • Toshiba’ CEO, Hisao Tanaka, stated that he would consider overseas locations for a new memory chip manufacturing plant:
    • “Samsung already has a factor in China, in Xian and Hynix has one too.”
    • “But Samsung has a plant in the United States as well.”

 

  • Toshiba announced it won a MFP contract from City of Hisperia, California:
    • 5 year contract

  • Microsoft announced it sold its stake in the Nook book eReader to Barnes and Noble for $62.4 million. Microsoft originally invested $300 million.

 

  • Scrypt of Austin, Texas, provider of DMS (document management systems) and fax solutions, announced it is merging with Axacore Inc. of San Diego, CA., maker of document workflow solutions.

 

  • What do they know? Hewlett Packard’s executive vice president, Henry Gomez, announced he sold 65,884 shares in the company for $2,635,360.

 

  • Hewlett Packard gets bad news: U.S. District Court Judge, Charles Breyer, rejected a proposed settlement in the shareholders’ lawsuits over HP’s controversial $11.1 billion takeover of Autonomy Software of England. The judge stated:
    • The proposed settlement improperly protected HP directors, officials and professional firms from future shareholder litigation

 

  • And HP gets more bad news: U.S. District Court Judge Sara Ellis denied HP’s motion to dismiss a court ruling that HP allegedly knew that it sold 928,000 fax machines that had a faulty power cord that could start a fire.

 

  • Accenture and CSO Insights magazine published results of survey:
    • Mediocre sales rep performance is costing companies 3.2% in potential revenue
    • A 5% improvement in sales performance is enabled through enhanced training, tech sales tools and better use of data an analytics
    • 20% of sales rep generate more than 60% of company’s sales revenues
    • 72% of companies plan on raising total revenue target for 2015 by 5% or more
      • Only 14% of chief sales officers are “very confident” that they can achieve increased revenue goals
      • 59% of sales reps are expected to achieve their quota in 2015 (down from 67% a year earlier)
    • 34% of sales reps’ time is spent on actual selling (down from 41%)
    • Adoption of tablet PC usage is up 400%
    • 30% of companies are using analytics

  • Lexmark announced that it has hired EFI’s CFO, David Reeder”, to become its new CFO.
    • Unknown who will replace Mr. Reeder at EFI.

 

  • Laserfiche, maker of ECM (enterprise content management) solution (and competitor to Hyland OnBase) will have its annual national dealer show in Anaheim, CA on 1/13/2015.

 

  • Summit Healthcare announced it won a data exchange platform contract from Porter Medical Center of Vermont, so it can meet Stage 2 of fed meaningful use requirements.

 

  • More details on why the Connecticut Health Policy Project (Obamacare website) was shut down:
    • Wasted $4.3 million in federal grants over 4 years
    • Paid out $343,000 in annual salaries
    • The 20 members of its board often missed required meetings
    • Never accomplished completion of project

 

  • More bad news for Obamacare. The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to hear the King v. Burwell case on 3/4/2015:
    • This case has potential to “disrupt or even unravel” the Obamacare legislation, according to Modern Healthcare magazine
    • The question in the lawsuit is whether the language of the healthcare law allows consumers to receive premium tax credit in states that have not established their own exchanges and instead are relying on the federal ObamaCare website.

 

  • Cerner announced it won a $500,000 document imaging module contract from Regional Medical Center of South Carolina, after the hospital admitted that it underestimated the number of departments that would use the DMS system and the volume of documents that would need to be converted and accessed by its Cerner EHR.

 

  • Epic’s EHR gets bad press from the Guardian newspaper of London, England, in regards to install at Addenbrooke Hospital:
    • “Epic’s user interface has progressed from abysmal an dysfunctional to merely ugly”

 

  • Auxilio of Mission Veijo, CA, announced it won a managed print service contract. Details:
    • Contract worth $18 million
    • 5 year contract
    • With “the largest region of a Top 10 US Health System”
    • Contracts starts on 2/2/2015

 

  • The fed Advisory Board published results of survey:
    • 66% of hospitals have attested for Meaningful Use Stage 2 regulations
    • 95% should achieve MU 2 by end of 2014

 

  • Results of survey of healthcare practitioners when asked “What should ONC (fed Office of National Coordinator, who is in charge of EHR standards)”:
    • 21% = shut itself down
    • 6% = open a health IT safety center
    • 63% = develop interoperability standards
    • 5% = continue emphasis on EHR adoption
    • 7% = focus on privacy and security

 

  • New data security law. President Obama is expected to sign the Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA):
    • Updates the original FISMA of 2012
    • Provides more up to date IT tools to diagnose and improve security
    • Will compel fed agencies to replace cumbersome, time-consuming annual checklists with continuous monitoring systems
    • Every data breach must be reported by fed agencies
    • New reforms will come at a faster pace

  • HIPAA/Data Security Breach news:
    • Boston Children’s Hospital agreed to pay a $40,000 HIPAA fine after the theft of an employee’s laptop resulted in exposure of patient’s PHI.
    • Mercy Medical Center of California announced that a 3rd party vendor mistakenly opened up a server to the Internet, exposing the PHI of 620 patients.
    • Northwestern Memorial Healthcare of Chicago, IL, notified 3000 patients that their PHI was exposed after an employee’s laptop computer was stolen from their car.
    • Christmas Day disruption of Sony’s PlayStation store and Microsoft’s Xbox Live network continue into a second day, with a hacking group known as Lizard Squad on Twitter claiming responsibility for the attacks.
    • The Department of Veterans Affairs, in a cryptic message, disclosed a potential security flaw that exposed the personally identifiable information of 7,054 veterans in a patient database belonging to and managed by a vendor that provides home telehealth services to the VA.
