IDC reports on hardcopy industry

– Total shipments worldwide down 10.6% year over year (includes inkjet, laser, printer, MFPs, etc.)
– Contractual sector (devices with service/supply contracts) has growth in every major geographic region ranging from 3.9% to 41%
– Some of revenue growth comes as most color pages are produced by installs

HP gets sued over print cartridge issue

– Consumers filed a class action lawsuit for allegedly selling printers labeled with “Smart Install” 
– Alleges that HP violated the California Business & Professions Code through unlawful and fraudulent business acts
– Plaintiffs allege they were drawn to purchase HP’s products because of the advertised ease of installation which is false

HP apologizes to customers

– Last week HP received much bad press after it sent out firmware that apparently disabled some HP printers if the end user placed non-HP branded cartridges in the devices
– This was followed by an official apology, and stated it would send out new firmware that will reverse the change
– “Although only a small number of customers have been affected, one customer who has a poor experience is too many.”; stated John Flaxman, HP COO.

HP claims success with inkjet presses

– Surpassed180 billion pages printed since 2009 on PageWide Web Press systems
– Customers now running more than 5 billion pages per month
– One PageWide Web Press T360M customer produced 7.3 million pages in one day, and 32 million pages in one week
– Installed Indigo 7900 and 7600 production color systems at TPSi, a commercial printer in  Tulsa, OK.

Arrest for making fake cash with color MFP

– Tucson police arrest Jennifer Lynne Gustafson after they found fake $20 bills in her car made with a color MFP
– The U.S. Secret Service claims that the fake bills were passed 33 times in 13 states.

Anti-paper claims removed

– Two Sides North America Inc. announced that over 65 leading companies have removed inaccurate anti-paper claims as a result of its efforts
– “The “Go Green and Save Trees” claims are misleading and false for many reasons, and they are a form of greenwashing that needs to be corrected.”; stated Phil Reibel of Two Sides o “Well-managed forests in the U.S. have grown by 58% in wood volume over the past 60 years”

 

Toshiba financial issues continue

– Is considering merging its nuclear division with nuclear divisions of Hitachi and Mitsubishi to reduce costs according to Reuters News Service
– The deal apparently depends on approval from General Electric, which is part owner.

Samsung has more product issues

– Safety warning issued by Consumer Product Safety Commission in regards to Samsung washing machines
– Apparently, complaints about the machines “exploding” have surfaced across country
– “It sounded like a bomb went off and was very scary.”; stated Kevin Suchyta of Austin, TX.

Accusoft publishes DMS study

– Survey of IT managers and employees in the U.S.
– 90% report they are confident that they have tools needed to protect their organizations documents
– 34% admit to have had sensitive information compromised
– 66% feel the ramifications of vague document management processes
– 20% claim they don’t know what document management tools their employer uses
– 74% have implemented some form of bring your own device (BYOD) policy o 50% require that IT approves of device
