– Reasons given why HP decided to target the copier markets again: o The transactional printer market (customer buys printer and supplies separately) declined 10.6% year over year on Q1 of 2016 according to IDC
o The contractual trend (customer pays per click for service/supplies) grew from 3.9% to 41% according to IDC
o The copier channel actually sells products and services instead of just fulfilling demand like in the IT channel
o Acquisition eliminates Samsung as a low cost competitor
o HP does not expect its own PageWide inkjet technology to displace laser anytime soon
o “We learn from what we do.  What we learned is that competing in the copier market with a non-differentiated copier was clearly not a winning proposition.  Now with Samsung we have a differentiated value proposition that will help us to win”; stated Enrique Lores of HP § “Our products are going to have better security, smart analytics, remote connections as well as the fact that it is printer technology and not copier technology”
§ “We will build our share over time but we believe that in that timeframe we will get meaningful share”
§ “We tried with the Edgeline (past HP inkjet copier) and definitely that was not a successful venture”
§ “The most important lesson is what I like to call the rules of engagement, rule of the game of the copier reseller ecosystem.  Where I have learned this lesson.  We were coming with great product, great technology, great vision but we needed to marry these with the ability of attracting and becoming credible with the (dealer) ecosystem”
§ “It is a market that is flat and therefore is a market where any new entrant and any share that the new entrant will acquire will be at the expense of other vendors”
§ “We are not introducing a portfolio of copiers, we are introducing a portfolio of printers that have disruptive capabilities that will be able to compete head to head with copiers but offer a lower service cost” hyrehy6
§ “To be a vendor in the copier space you need to have the portfolio to go to market, the service and support.  These are the table stakes but on top of this we layer unique technology”
§ “The current (Canon made HP A4 laser products) is what we will have in 2017…would continue as transactional unit”
§ “Our channel sales of the A3 products is going to be a combination of partners that today are working with us that have developed a managed reseller capability and new resellers that have been selling only copier products from our competition”
§ “Many of these resellers were also selling A4 (HP) printers, so part of the value proposition for them is you were buying A4 printers from us, now you can also buy A3 printers from us that have the exact value that can help you to make more money or win more deals”
§ “To create general awareness in this category it is definitely not with a broad brush kind of marketing it is working and providing marketing development funds to our channel partners”

o “We have already started that journey.  We are already in big discussion with the largest copier partners across the planet.  We have gone country by country.  We have mapped them.  We know where they are down to the regions.”; stated HP CEO, Dion Weisler. § “We have a lot of work to do still before we physically start shipping the products but we have made great progress over the past 6 months”
§ “For very large corporations, we will maintain our direct approach in managed print services our sales is going to be a combination of direct for customers that are very large or that have a global presence and for the rest of the market we will go through the channel”
