–       Bankers taking over Sharp?  According to Reuters News Service, Sharp is reluctantly agreeing to allow executives from two major banks to help manage the financially struggling company.  Details:

  • Sharp is being forced into this move, as it has apparently suspended talks with Hon Hai Precision for a cash infusion, as the Taiwanese company also wanted more control of Sharp.
  • The two banks involved are Mizuho Corporate Bank and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, according to Kyodo News.

 

–       Xerox rethinking its color wax technology?  Xerox announced that is has acquired Impika  Corp. of France.  Details:

  • Impika is a manufacturer of digital color presses that use water-based inkjet technology
  • Xerox already attempted to enter the production inkjet market with the “CiPress” line of color presses, using “solid ink” technology, which uses heat to melt wax chunks, and then spray the melted ink to create image.  This technology came from acquisition of Tektronix, and its “Phaser” product line. (but end users are apparently concerned with image quality)
  • Impika was founded by Paul Morgavi, who is CEO of the company
    • will report to Jeff Jacobsen, President of Xerox’s Global Graphic Communications division
    • uses piezo crystal print head technology(similar to Epson)(instead of HP’s thermal bubblejet)
    • Up to 28” wide print path
    • up to 1200x1200dpi
    • top speed of 127 meters per minute (rollfed)

–       Xerox announced it sold a 770 Digital Color Press and a Color 1000 Press to JMD Colour Scan of Mumbai, India.

 

–       Toshiba announced that it replaced its President.  Details:

  • new president is Hisao Tanaka, 62
  • “I will turn Toshiba into a more globalized corporation and solidify its profitability”
  • will abandon company’s current approach of emphasizing a few core sectors, and focus instead on expanding overseas markets and developing new divisions
    • candidates for new division are; renewable energy, healthcare and electric vehicles
  • “What is important is to draw a new picture by discussing from scratch how things should be done and whether conventional methods are correct.”
  • the new president’s tasks will include; “expanding the company’s energy and chipmaking operations, while cutting costs to increase profit

 

–       Toshiba’s lawyers argued last week that an expert witness used “shoddy science” during a court case in Oklahoma federal court, in which a Toshiba laptop computer is allegedly to blame for a massive fire that destroyed a man’s home.

 

–       Toshiba announced it won bid to build a 1600 megawatt nuclear reactor for Fennovoima Power of Finland.

 

–       Toshiba and Hewlett Packard are being sued in Delaware court for alleged patent infringement, by Maz Encryption Technologies, which is claiming the company is illegally using its data encryption technology.

 

–       Lexmark announced it won a RFP from Ann Arbor School District of Michigan.  Details:

  • includes 103 MFPs
  • 39 month lease

–       Canon announced it has agreed to be a sponsor of the Asia Golf Tour.  Cost not announced.

 

–       Canon launched two high speed desktop scanners, the DR-G1100 and DR-G1130 featuring:

  • scans both sides of original at same time
  • scans in color or b/w
  • 1130 scans up to 130ipm or 65opm
  • 1100 scans up to 100ipm or 50opm
  • document feeder holds up to 500 originals
  • automatic double feed detection

–       Canon focused on selling solutions.  Dennis Amorosano, Senior Director of Solutions Marketing, stated; “While we operate in an environment of increase hardware commoditization and declining overall page volumes, this year we expect increased customer demand for solutions that streamline workflows, optimize business processes, connect mobile employees and integrate cloud services.”

 

–       Canon announced it will diversify into the security camera business.  “The future of IP security lies with intelligent cameras and HD quality images.  We see a huge demand for security products….and by being so strong in the imaging business, foraying into the surveillance camera market was only a natural progression for the company.”; stated Hendrik Verbrugghe, Canon Marketing Director.

 

–       Lexmark’s Brian Hendersen, said this about solutions:

  • “The short term direction of the day, is of course mobile printing and the cloud.  Most vendors are providing solutions, or moving in the direction of being able to provide support for these technologies”

–       Brother drops color laser printer price even lower?  Brother launched the HL-3000 series of desktop color LED printers.  Details:

  • base MSRP of only $249.99 for HL-3140CW and $279.99 for HL-3170CDW
  • top speed of 23ppm for HL-3170CDW and 19ppm for HL-3140CW
  • 600x2400dpi (interpolated)

–       Another management shakeup at Ricoh.  The company announced that:

  • Masamitsu Sakurai will resign as chairman of the board
  • Shiro Kondo will move from President and CEO to chairman of the board
  • Zenji Miura, currently CFO, will become new President and CEO

 

–       Heidelberg announced it sold a Linoprint C901 (relabed Ricoh Aficion PRO C901) to Doveton Press of Bristol, England.

 

–       Xeikon of Belgium announced it sold a Xeikon 6000 production color system to VXP Direktmarketing KG of Germany for direct mail printing.

 

–       Hewlett Packard announced it sold three Indigo WS6600 production color systems to Geostick of Uithoorn, The Netherlands.

 

–       Hewlett Packard announced it sold the webOS software it acquired, when it bought out Palm Computing, to LG of Korea, who will use it to make smart HDTVs.

 

–       Hewlett Packard announced that its Indigo production color systems can be integrated with the XMPie USTORE web-2-print system from Xerox.

 

–       Info-Market released survey results regarding office color printing:

–       Education vertical study results published by Coleman Parkes Research:

  • 88% of those surveyed within educational institutions said the way they work is out of date and prevents them from being as effective and efficient as they could be, which could have a significant impact on their ability to effectively deliver high quality education services
  • 89% are being impacted by mobile working, the sector is under pressure to adopt new technologies to support this
  • 77% said that while they have access to some of the latest devices their use is being hindered by back end legacy systems, meaning they may not be able to fully embrace mobile technologies like smartphones and tablets to improve document workflows

–       Yahoo Corp.’s Jackie Reses, VP of Human Resources, sent out a memo to all employees, stating that the company is terminating its work from home program, and requiring all employees to report to a Yahoo office:

  • “It is critical that we are all present in our offices.  Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people and impromptu team meetings.”
  • Yahoo made it decision after its own internal research revealed that employees who reported to the office were more productive than those working from home.

 

–       Copier catches fire, and burned down an office in San Gabriel, CA last week, according to Fire Chief Christopher Gray.  No injuries reported.  Brand of copier was not released.
