–       Xerox announced it sold a Color 1000 Digital Press to TopCopy, a commercial printer in Claremont, South Africa.

 

–       Article in PrintWeek magazine, has comments from Xerox’s CRO, Ursula Burns, on the company’s plans for production color inkjet systems growth:

o   When asked if print is becoming peripheral to Xerox as compared to managed services, she stated; “we are not measuring importance by how big our businesses are. It’s not about size, it’s about penetration and value creation in the market.”

o   “If we are number one and it’s a tenth of revenue, I’m happy”

o   “We need to build the same depth of portfolio in inkjet as in Xerography, as we continue to grow, change and diversify our business you should not be surprised about us acquiring capabilities.

o   When asked about plans for inkjet in packaging, wide format or functional printing, she said; “These are all options. None of them are impossible for us to go after, the team is going to have to pick. Some will be clear choices, some will by flyers. If we try everything, we’re going to mess up everything.”

  • “Digital printing is currently addressing only 2% of the total print market. 98% is still free. Many people predict that more than 50% of the total printing market will be addressed by inkjet. I agree!”

  • Xerox’s Impika division will show a product at DRUPA 2016 show that will run at 350 meters per minute. “It will be the fastest printer in the world.” Stated Mr. Morgavi.

 

–       Xerox announced it won a contract to manage employee benefits for Heinz Corp. and its 2500 employees.

 

–       Xerox announced it will be sponsor of “30 Seconds To Know’, which is 30 second videos on MSNBC cable TV channel, showing a MSNBC newscaster explaining news of the day.

 

–       Cartridge World, which has 600 locations in the U.S. which refill printer cartridges, announced that it plans on actually selling printers and MFPs, representing Canon and HP brands, according to press release.

 

–       Google purchased Dropcam, a home security and camera vendor, for $555 million in cash. The company provides WiFi video service with live streaming, two way talk, alerts and night vision.

 

–       Coca Cola Corp. and Black Eyed Peas artist, Will.i.am, announced a new company called “Ekocycle” that will launch a 3D printer that will sell for $1199, and use materials from used clear plastic soda pop bottles.

 

–       Adobe Corp. announced that its 2nd quarter profits are up 16% on strength of its subscriptions to a cloud-based version of its creative design software.

 

–       Sage Consulting published results of survey of mobile device usage:

o   77% of companies do not plan for, budget, or invent in mobile tech

o   54% supply employees with mobile devices, down 14%

o   68% admit that smartphones had a positive effect on productivity

o   70% note that use of mobile tech has had most positive effect on customer services

–       According to CNET, Samsung will use Google’s annual developer conference to launch new version of a smartwatch that will be running Google Android Wear operating system.

 

–       According to article in Wall Street Journal, Samsung is considering making attempt to acquire Nuance Communications Inc,, maker of eCopy, Equitrac, Dragon, etc. The company’s current market value is $6 billion.

o   According to Reuters News Service, Samsung has $60 billion of cash on hand.

 

–       Print Control Software Inc., maker of ROI Print Manager print tracking solutions, announced the release of ROI Cloud, providing multi-tenant support for dealers that want to have all of their customers reporting to one cloud server for management.

 

–       According to the Federal Trade Commission, printer/MFP cartridge fraud (i.e toner pirates) costs victims an estimated $200 million per year.

 

–       Hewlett Packard unveiled the CS100 server, code-named Moonshot, that will use a new processor from Intel, called the Xeon E3, code-named Crystal Well, and will be suitable for use in graphics-intensive applications such as CAD or video editing.

 

–       HP announced it placed an Indigo 10000 digital color press at Sun Litho, a commercial printer in Salt Lake City, UT.

 

–       HP launched “Helion”, which is a managed cloud storage offering for the enterprise. Pricing not announced.

–       Xerox’s CEO, Ursula Burns, responded to question about the company’s $53 million acquisition of Impika of France, which makes production color inkjet systems:

o   “We need to build the same depth of portfolio in inkjet as we have in xerography. We could have thrown a lot of money at building it up from scratch, but we didn’t have to. Impika was a great fit and we’ll do that every single time if we have the chance.”

o   “It jump started us in the marketplace.”

o   “Impika operates in a market segment that will contribute significantly to our growth in the years to come.”

o   “We want to become number one overall in the commercial graphics space.”

o   (Impika currently uses inkjet print heads from Panasonic and Kyocera.)

 

–       What do they know? Glenview Capital Management announced that it has sold $113 million of the shares it owned of Xerox. Reasons given:

o   Xerox’s move from hardware to business services “has seen challenges with rising costs for expanding its services business, and revenue declines at its document technology business.”

o   In Q1 of 2014, Xerox recorded “net restructuring and asset impairment charges of $27 million which included approximately $29 million of severance costs related to headcount reductions of approximately 1,250 employees worldwide, $1 million of lease cancellation costs, and $4 million of asset impairments.”

o   In 2013, Xerox “saw $142 million of severance costs related to headcount reductions of 4,900 employees”

o   “Services segment revenues were flat compared to the prior year”

o   “services margin declines mainly due to costs associated with the implementation of new Medicaid (ObamaCare)”

o   “Xerox said as a result of increased implementation costs in government healthcare (ObamaCare), it’s lowering its guidance for both full year Services segment margin and 2014 earnings”

o   For 2013, Xerox used its cash for “$434 million of net payment on debt and $296 million for dividends”

–       HP announced it will launch the Apollo 6000 and 8000, its first water-cooled supercomputers. Pricing and ship date not announced.

 

–       Hewlett Packard conducted a press conference in San Diego to give out details on a new series of color inkjet wide format printers, that will use a page-wide inkjet printhead, offering speeds competitive with LED/toner based engines (like KIP).

o   “HP’s intent is to disrupt the reprographics market, which is currently mainly using LED technology with a little bit of Memjet.”; stated Francois Martin of HP

o   “There will be no need to trade off between operating cost, speed, quality and the ability to produce color and mono”

o   “Today most firms have separate technologies, using inkjet for color and LED for mono. We will offer everything in a single device.”

–       HP announced it won a $138 million managed IT services contract from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp..

 

–       Canon announced that it is moving its European headquarters, from Amstelveen in the Netherlands, to London, England, according to Canon Europe president and CEO, Ryoichi Bamba. (The location in the Netherlands is former worldwide headquarters of Oce’, which Canon acquired for $1 billion in 2012)

 

–       Canon announced that according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), Canon holds the number one market share as specified in IDC’s 2013 Q4 Asia/Pacific Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker. (Canon does not certify its numbers)

 

–       Canon announced it has authorized Forefront Technologies, to be a full line distributor for dealers in United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, where it hopes to gain 4% marketshare in 2014.

 

–       Canon announced it has acquired Milestone Systems of Denmark, maker of video management software, in attempt to boost its sales of network video surveillance cameras. Purchase price unknown.

 

–       Memjet announced it replaced a fleet of b/w laser printers with its C6010 desktop color inkjet printers (60ppm) at Cheque Mates, Inc. of Australia, which provides services for the mailing industry.

 

–       Okidata announced a free app, called Mobile Print, which will allow end users to print using Android based mobile devices.

 

–       Heidelberg of Germany, maker of offset presses, announced it has acquired Gallus Holding AG of Switzerland, maker of digital package printing solutions.

–       Photizo Group recognized E.O. Johnson Business Technologies, a Lanier dealer in Wisconsin, as one of its “2014 Leaders Index for Managed Print Services Channel Providers.”

o   Consumers will be able to configure smartphones using a library of hardware modules, such as cameras, WiFi antennas, battery compartments, etc.

o   The 3D printer will be 50X faster than current products

 

–       Toshiba launched a new ad campaign for its office equipment division, entitled; “Together Information”:

–       The annual Payments Summit highlighted the need in the healthcare vertical to scan:

o   20% of all healthcare payments arrive with a paper EOB (explanation of benefits document)

o   “If you take out government payers (Medicare & Medicaid), it’s closer to 40%”, stated Bryan Bruton of Orbograph Software.

o   “The bottom line is that there are billions of healthcare transactions per year coming through with paper EOBs.”

o   “I think the volume is going to remain fairly stable, so there is a lot of opportunity for automating capture.”

o   “Also, often the reason a payment is denied is written in a narrative on a paper EOB.”

 

–       Microsoft announced it won order to supply 2,000 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet PCs from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), to be used with its EHR.

 

–       Lexmark announced it won a Perceptive Software ECM contract (enterprise content management) contract from Catholic Health of New York, to integrate with its Info financial and HR systems, as well as the Lawson AP system.

 

–       The City of San Diego announced a new program that identifies frequent callers/visitors of its emergency services, and has reduced costs by $700,000 per year, and number of encounters with frequent callers by 38%.

 

–       The Central University Hospital of Rennes, France announced that a robotic system mistakenly sent $15 million worth of prescription drugs into an incinerator during the past 5 years.

 

 

 

–       The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) announced that it will no longer allow hospitals to use relocatable power strips to be used with medical equipment in patient care areas. Instead the devices must be directly plugged into UPS systems (uninterruptible power supplies).

 

–       A Wall Street Journal article on ObamaCare analysis finds:

o   2300 healthcare providers were paid $500,000 or more for performing a single procedure or service

o   Some of the providers were paid even though the supposed procedures submitted for payment were well outside of their area of expertise

 

–       Serco, which won a $1.25 billion contract to process ObamaCare applications, stated that its call center employees are “working around the clock now”.

o   Media reports in mid-May quoted current and ex-employees who said that they played board games, read books or slept while on the clock.

 

–       The Department of Veteran Affairs published more finding from its audit of its healthcare facilities:

o   13% of schedulers were told to enter desired patient appointment dates different from what patient requested

o   8% of facilities kept external scheduling lists invisible to the VA’s VistA EHR

o   57,000 veterans have been waiting for more than 90 days to get medical appointment

o   63,869 veterans have not been seen for appointment

 

–       IBM announced it is partnering with Epic to bid on the upcoming Department of Defense’s $11 billion EHR contract.

 

–       Benefis Health System of Montana published an RFI for a new acutecare EHR to replace Meditech, as it implemented NextGen for its ambulatory clinics.

 

–       Epic announced it implemented its EHR at Lexington Medical Center in North Carolina.

o   Reportedly is also going to replace Meditech and NextGen at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital in Montana

 

–       Cerner is reportedly is replacing NextGen at Community Medical Center in Missoula, MT.

 

–       Cerner getting bad press after it is reported that Via Christi Hospital in Kansas has 12.5 hour waits in its emergency department after the “go live” of its new Cerner EHR.

 

–       Medsphere Systems announced it won an OpenVistaEHR contract from IntraCare North Hospital of Carlsbad, CA.

 

–       Apple recently declared its intention to unite fitness bands, medical devices and personal fitness apps with its new iOS application called “Health”.

o   It will partner with Epic, maker of one of the most popular EHRs.

o   UBS Analyst, Steven Milunuvich, believes that Apple will launch iWatch for $300 this October, and sell 21 million units in 2015, that will work with “Health”

 

 

 

 

 

–       HIPAA/Data Security Breach News:

o   AccessHealthCT of Connecticut notified 400 patients that their PHI was exposed when an employee of a subcontractor, Maximus Inc., left a backpack on a street that contained paper records.

o   St. Francis Hospital of Georgia admitted that one of its employees mistakenly sent out a mass email to 1,175 patients using “CC” instead of “BCC”, which illegally exposed the personal email address of the patients.

o   St. Joseph Health notified 33,702 patients of the former Redwood Medical Group that their PHI was exposed after a USB thumb drive was stolen from an unlocked employee locker.

o   Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania notified 1800 patients that their PHI (personal health information) was exposed after an employee illegally accessed their info from home.

o   The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) announced that up to 62,000 employees had their personal info exposed after its servers were breached.

o   P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ, announced that an unknown number of customers had their credit card and debit card info stolen due to breach.

o   Rex Mundi, a group of hackers, took responsibility for breaching the network of Domino’s Pizza in Belgium and France and obtaining access to 592,000 records.

o   Marcel Lehel Lazar, a Romanian hacker who goes by handle “Guccifer”, was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly breaking into the personal online accounts of a family member of former President George W. Bush.

o   Target Corp. announced it will name Brad Maiorino as its first CISO (chief information security officer), as a result of a huge data breach last fall.

o   The federal government’s head of HIPAA, Joy Pritts, announced her resignation. She was the Chief Privacy Officer at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, a unit of the Department of Health & Human Services.
