Toshiba financial woes update

– Company asked a Japanese law firm to help estimate the potential financial impact it if decides to allow its U.S. nuclear division to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy
– Terry Gou, CEO of Foxconn, announced he is a serious bidder for the memory chip division of Toshiba, stating that he also saved Sharp from financial distress. o Toshiba stated it will accept bids until 3/29/17 for the division (asking $9 billion)

– Company also stated that it has put up its Landis+Gyr smart meter manufacturing division, which is acquired in 2011 for $2.3 billion.  (asking $2 billion)
– Also considering selling its stake in Toshiba Machine (manufacturer of molding machines) (asking $134 million)

Samsung’s leader is indicted

– Lee Jae-yong, Samsung’s de facto leader, was indicted in South Korea on bribery and embezzlement charges
– Mr. Lee was arrested on 2/17/17 and 4 other Samsung executives were also indicted, but not arrested
– 3 of the 4 indicted have already resigned from Samsung
– “We are preparing hard, thinking that the upcoming Samsung trial could be the trial of the century that the entire world will be watching.”; stated special prosecutor Park Young-soo.
– Mr. Lee inherited the business from his father, who was convicted of bribery and tax evasion

Xerox buys another dealer

– Announced that its Global Imaging division acquired Laser Resources Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa
– LRI is a dealer for Konica Minolta, Canon, Toshiba and Lexmark
– Former owners, Bob Lashier & Andy Lashier will remain on as president and VP.
– Purchase price not announced  (Xerox stated it would spend $100 million on acquisitions this year)

Xerox pays down some debt

– Announced it plans to retire $300 million in debt
– Will also target another $300 million of debt to exchange for new debt
– (some industry pundits believe that this could be in preparation for sale)

Fujifilm reports earnings

– Reported its Q3 FY2017 numbers for period ending 12/31/2016

– Operating profit down 4.9% to $472 million
– Operating profit margin of 8.7%
– Net income up to $405.6 million

Apple trashes printers in new ad

– Launched a new series of TV ads for its iPad Pro tablet computer
– In one of the ads, Apple makes case that with table and a pen, documents do not need to be printed, but instead received, signed and sent electronically
– Claims that if confidential document is printed, user has to run to printer before any coworkers can see the confidential document

Man arrested for smashing copier

– New Town, North Dakota police arrested Lukas Ksotelecky, an auto shop teacher at New Town High School
– Apparently, he used a hammer to smash one of the school’s copiers
– Police responded to a call of teacher “freaking out”
– The school has placed him on administrative leave
– Faces a maximum of 5 years in prison

HIPAA & Data Security Update
West Virginia University Health System notified 7,445 patients that their PHI was exposed after an employee at Berkeley Medical Center was caught removing paper records from office.
Kingman Regional Medical Center of Arizona notified an unknown number of patients that their PHI was exposed after a “software glitch” caused their info to be mailed incorrectly.
Emory Healthcare of Atlanta, GA notified 79,930 patients that their PHI was exposed after being hit with ransomware.  The EHR is now restored, but officials would not answer as to whether or not they paid the ransom.
North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services notified 12,731 Medicaid patients that their PHI was exposed after an employee sent the info in an unencrypted email to adult care homes.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center of Tennessee notified 3,247 patients that their PHI was exposed after it was illegally accessed by former employees.
American Senior Communities of Indiana notified 17,000 employees that their personal info was exposed after an employee was hit with phishing attack.
– Security researchers at TrapX Inc. notified CIOs that a new form of malware, named MEDJACK, was created specifically to attack the healthcare vertical in the U.S.  The hackers use to try to penetrate an endpoint (such as a medical device) and then enter the healthcare system’s network
Sharp Health of San Diego, CA notified 750 patients that their PHI was exposed after the theft of a computer and external hard drive.
Catalina Post-Acute and Rehabilitation of Tucson, AZ notified 2,953 patients that their PHI was exposed after paper records were left in area unattended and accessible to the public.
