Kodak Alaris launches wireless scanners

 

Hewlett Packard Enterprise to divest more?

– According to some industry reporters, the company will continue to slim down and sell off software assets
– The divestures reported would come from a portfolio of acquisitions HPE made over last decade, including Autonomy ($10.3 billion in 2011), Mercury Interactive ($4.5 billion in 2006) and Vertica Systems ($350 million in 2011)
– The software division’s annual revenue is down 13% to $774 million

HP Inc. settles inkjet lawsuit

– Memjet of San Diego, CA and HP Inc. have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current actions between the parties and a cross-license
– Term of settlement were not published

Dealer expands in Texas

– The Stewart Organization has opened new 40,000 square foot building in northwest Houston on Directors Row.
– New office will house 170 employees and each sales rep will have their own office.
– Headquarters is in Irving, Texas and is a Canon/Oce’ dealer
– Dealership’s service guarantee is; “If you’re within 15 miles of our office, we’ll be there in 90 minutes or less. If you’re more than 15 miles from our office, we’ll be there in 180 minutes or less.  And if we’re not, we’ll credit your bill for the machine needing service. 1% for every minute we’re late—up to 100%.”

Xerox wins production print contracts

– Award from Spin Print of South Yorkshire, England o Installed a Xerox iGen4 production color system and Color 800 system
o Shop also acquired an MGI Meteor production color system (which is based on a Konica Minolta engine)
o Reason given for choosing the iGen4 was “color quality and consistency is fantastic from edge to edge”

– Award from Color Monster of Guernsey, England o Installed two 700s, one 800 and one 1000 production color systems

Xerox installs new MW regional president

– Announced that Dan Tuohy is new President of Chicago Office Technology Group (COTG)
– COTG is the Illinois locations of Xerox’s Global Imaging division
– Mr. Touhy previously was VP of Sales
– He replaces David Sass, who was named president in January of 2014

Xerox executive dumps stock

– In a document submitted to the Security and Exchange Commission, James Firestone, Xerox’s Executive VP, sold 50,000 shares of stock he owned
– Was paid $467,895 or $9.40 per share

Toshiba former execs may face charges

– Three former company presidents under investigation by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office’s special investigation unit over Toshiba’s high-profile accounting scandal that inflated earnings by $596 million
– The Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission of Japan will decide whether to file criminal complaints against the three, Atsutoshi Nishida, Norio Sasaki and Hisao Tanaka

Internet of Things Market to Drive Careers

– Evans data Corp. published survey of software developers
– Has been a 14% increase in development for mobile devices
– Numbers of developers currently working on IoT apps is up 34%
– More than 6.2 million are currently working on the apps
– Total number of developers expected to grow to 25 million by 2020
– Up to 6.4 billion IoT devices could be in use by end of 2016, and grow to 20.8 billion by 2020
– 52% of developers use Java
– 70% are using Linux

Kyocera continues to chase fake cartridges

– Kyocera (aka Kyoto Ceramic Company of Japan) announced it seized another $5.5 million worth of counterfeit print cartridges
– Is conducting a “wider crackdown on the growing amount” of counterfeit products
– Is “locked in several legal cases across Europe”
– Company stated; “They buy the empty toner containers and ship them back to the manufacturing plants around the world, in China, the UAE, Turkey and Eastern Eurpore.  They get refilled with toner and get nice new packaging on the outside – then they put them back into circulation and pass them off as being genuine consumable”

Ricoh gets first order for 3D printer

– Announced it has sold its first 3D printer to Laser Zentrum Nord of Germany
– Will install the new Ricoh S5500P (is a rebranded unit from Aspect of Japan)
– Laser Zentrum will use the unit to make parts for the aerospace and automotive industries

Ricoh details on MPS contract at Penn State

– Lisa Glass, Director of IT at Penn State Berks campus, reports that students use 44% less paper during past year
– Faculty and staff used 10% less paper
– Previously the Berks campus produced 5.5 million pages on its printers and copiers
– Starting each fall, each student receives an allocation of only 250 pages for printing
– Goal is for an additional reduction of 20% in 2016

Ricoh launches new security solutions

– Now offers “IT Security, Risk and Compliance Services”
– Through its managed IT services division, named “mindSHIFT”
– Will provide external vulnerability assessment services on a quarterly basis or as a one-time service
– Includes vulnerability scanning and reporting, as well as analysis and remediation planning
– Also offers internal and external penetration testing
– Based on NIST Security framework
– Pricing not announced

IBM files patent for printing technology

– Would prevent printers from printing copyrighted materials
– Technology involves computer processors that identify potential copyrighted material in a file for printing

Boeing awards printer contract

– Award given to AstroNova of West Warwick, Rhode Island
– Will manufacture the ToughWriter 5, a heavy duty printer for use on flight deck of some airplanes

Okidata to offer EFI Fiery systems

– Announced it will offer EFI Fiery C9 digital front end as an option for its C900 series of high speed color LED toner printers
– Supports the optional clear and white toners for the C941 and C942 series
– Also available for C931 series

Large dealer gets bigger

– DEX Imaging Inc. announced it has acquired Modular Document Solutions (MDS), which is a $30 million/year Sharp dealership with 15 locations in Florida
– DEX now has reached its $250 million/year revenue goal for 2016
– MDS’s principals, Bill Sprecher and Marty Maddox, will now lead the newly formed DEX of the Carolinas by first opening location in Charlotte, NC and “then into all other major markets throughout North and South Carolina”

Mutoh hires new executive

– Mutoh, maker of wide format color inkjet printers, announced it hired a new president for its Americas division
– Brian Phipps, the new president, was previously VP and GM.

Canon PPS receives certification

– Announced that its PRISMAsync Color Print Server option for its imagePRESS production color toner systems has received the G7 Certified System designation from the International Digital Enterprise Alliance (Idealliance)
– In regards to the ability of the system to calibrate a printing device to meet G7 grayscale definition and meets or exceeds established industry tolerance for excellence

Canon & HP win large contract

– Award from FedEx Office, formerly known as Kinko’s Copies
– Installed more than 1800 Canon imagePRESS C700 production color systems
– Installed more than 1400 HP DesignJet T3500 color inkjet wide format systems
– Covers all FedEx Office locations in the U.S. and Canada

Epson claims inkjet success

– Company reports that its new ink tank color printers (which use aluminum foil bags of ink) were placed in 15 million locations worldwide
– Located in 150 countries and regions

Samsung exec divorce

– As reported by The Korea Herald newspaper, for the past two years, the eldest daughter of South Korea’s richest man has been mired in divorce proceedings.
– Samsung heiress and Shilla hotel head Lee Boo Jin, 46, divorced Mr Im Woo Jae, a consultant at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, in January this year.
– She was granted custody of their seven-year-old son, and Mr Im is allowed to visit their son once a month.
– He is now claiming 1.2 trillion won (S$1.4 billion) from her, a sum believed to be the largest divorce settlement ever sought in the country, reports say.
– In court papers filed last month, he is also seeking damages of 10 million won ($11,700) for “mental anguish”.
– Reports said that 99 per cent of Ms Lee’s assets are shares in various Samsung companies.
– Forbes estimates her net worth to be US$1.64 billion as of July 9, 2016.

Xerox backs out of huge merger deal?

– According to Bloomberg News, Xerox was considering buying and merging with R.R. Donnelley, the country’s largest multi-location commercial printer
– R.R. Donnelley is one of Xerox’s largest production print customers and also owns many HP production print systems
– Purchase price would have been $5 billion and would have required Xerox to take on much more debt
– This acquisition would have put Xerox in direct competition with many of its existing PPS commercial print customers
– Bloomberg now reports that Xerox has backed out of deal

Xerox executive leaves

– Don H. Liu announced he is leaving his position as Xerox’s Executive VP, General Counsel and Secretary
– He accepted position with Target department stores

Xerox wins production print contract

– Award from Digital Color Centre of Cape Town, South Africa
– Installed a Versant 80 production color toner system
– Shane Hutchison stated reasons for choosing over competitors o Unrivalled print quality
o Nothing compares to quality and reliability
o Handles 350gsm stocks at top speed with option

Copier dealer buys competitor

– Fraser Advanced Information Systems of Pennsylvania announced it acquired competitor, Advanced Business Equipment (ABE)
– Fraser is dealer for Sharp, Canon, HP and Muratec, and has not announced if it will keep ABE’s lineup of Toshiba, Kyocera and Lexmark product lines

Copier dealer will drop copier from crane

– Datamax, a dealer in Kansas City, conducted a “Worst Copier in KC” contest
– Winner of contest will be allowed to watch their hated copier dropped from a 10 story high crane and a new MFP on 7/28/16
– Companies must pay $30 to enter contest, and proceeds go to charity

Lexmark signs up new dealer in Georgia

– Announced it has authorized Document Strategies of Atlanta, run by Lance Reed
– Also carries the Toshiba product line.

MPS Opportunity With A4 Devices

– Published by InfoTrends
– Total forecasted revenue for equipment (A3 & A4), supplies and service is decreasing in the U.S. o Total unit placements (including A3 & A4) in the U.S. are decreasing
o Total page volumes (from A3 & A4 devices) in the U.S. are decreasing

– Approximately 30,170,141 devices installed in the U.S. that are A4 (can print only on letter or legal size paper, and most likely sitting on desktop) o A4 devices produce 628 billion pages per year § 200 billion of these pages are color

– Example given of Miami-Fort Lauderdale Florida area o 546,556 total devices including A3 and A4 are in use
o Total of 14 billion pages produced per year
o 90% or 492,594 of the devices are A4 § A4 devices produce 11 billion prints per year, or 80% of total

This would imply that if sales rep only replaces existing A3 devices in the U.S., then only capturing 20% of the clicks in their territory

– Award from Christiansen Print of Thimm Group of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

HP execs comment on MFP business

– Tuan Tran, head of LaserJet  Business, stated: o When asked about selling inkjet MFPs that HP makes, versus HP LaserJet MFPs that are made by Canon; “the best friends on laser, and bitter enemies on inkjet”
o Feels that security is one of key issues
o Offer run-time intrusion detection to keep printer from being hacked
o Self-healing system that uses backup copy of software to heal itself after attempted intrusion
o Built-in analytics to enhance serviceability of MFP

– Mike Weir, head of managed print services, stated: o 70% win rate on MPS deals
o 6X market rate of MPS growth
o May switch name from MPS to MWS (Market Workplace Services)
o Now including 3rd party devices in MPS contracts
o Will launch Instant Ink as a hardware/supplies bundle for inkjet MFPs

Kyocera to diversify into hairloss treatment?

– Announced it is partnering with Organ Technologies
– Will conduct research to develop prototype equipment to extract stem cells from hair follicles
– Hopes to launch new business in 2020 acting as contract manufacturer

Kyocera MFPs lock toner in place

– Announced that its new TASKalfa 2552ci and 3252ci models of color laser MFPs have a feature where the toner cartridges are locked in place and can not be removed until the system senses that the cartridges are completely out of toner o Supposed to prevent end users from replacing toner cartridges early when the low toner indicator lamp comes one
o Sharp supposedly also offers this feature on some models

– When the black toner cartridge is completely empty, the technician can remove and then insert as a waste toner receptacle

Sharp’s struggles continue

– The Nikkei 225 Stock Average in Japan announced that it will replace Sharp with Yamaha Motor on its main stock board
– Change will force passive funds to rebalance their holdings at the close of the market on 7/29/16

More bad press for paper

– Data published by World Counts made following claims: o 93% of paper comes from trees
o 50% of the waste of businesses is composed of paper
o To print average Sunday newspaper requires 75,000 trees
o Average tree produces enough oxygen for 3 people to breathe
o 12.1 trillion sheets of paper are used per year in U.S. offices
o 25% of landfill waste is paper
o 33% of municipal waste is paper
o Demand for paper is expected to double before 2030

– What was not mentioned, as detailed in recent issue of USA Today: o 66.8% of all paper consumed is recovered for recycling
o the volume of trees on U.S. timberlands has increased 58%

over the past 60 years due to paper mills planting more trees than what are taken down to create paper
