Toshiba financial issues update

– Executives again delayed the sale of its NAND memory chip division

– Leaves company with very little time to knock down its debt and avoid delisting from the Tokyo Stock Exchange

– Company’s liabilities currently exceed its assets by 552.9 billion yen

– Western Digital, which had sued to force Toshiba to sell the NAND division to them, has now apparently offered to drop out of the bidding in return for a h2er position in the 2 companies’ chip joint venture.

– Bloomberg News is reporting that Foxconn (aka Hon Hai Precision of Taiwan) is making an offer for the division that includes an investment from Apple, with total bid possible reaching $19 billion

o This deal may run into political problems as the Japanese government is reluctant to see division sold to a Taiwan/Chinese based company

– Apple has sought to stop Western Digital from taking control of Toshiba chip business by threatening not to buy its products in the future, people with knowledge of the deal said.

o Apple, which uses Toshiba’s NAND flash memory chips in its iPhones, is concerned about losing pricing power if Western Digital is running the operation, the sources said on Friday.

o However, if Western Digital remains a minority investor in the business, Apple, a top customer for Toshiba chips, is offering around 50 billion yen ($460 million) to a group including the U.S. firm to help finance a bid, one source said.

– Reuters News Service reported that a group including Bain Capital, Apple and South Korea’s SK Hynix has raised its offer for Toshiba Corp’s chip business to 2.4 trillion yen ($22.3 billion)
