Lexmark reports on its finances:

  • Last quarter’s total revenues up 2% to $1.032 billion

Lexmark to buy back shares:

  • Announced it will buy back $30 million worth of shares
  • Will do so through an accelerated repurchase agreement with Citibank
  • Is effort to boost share price which dropped as low as $37.37

Toshiba announced withdrawal from North American TV market:

  • In a cost cutting move, Toshiba announced it will no longer market TVs under its own brand in North American, including the U.S.
  • It however will allow Compal Electronics of Taiwan to its sell TVs in North America using Toshiba’s name
  • “As the growth of the global market is slowing down, and continues to see harsh price competition, Toshiba has decided to build a new business structure.”, stated a Toshiba spokesperson

Toshiba reports its earnings:

  • Net profit for entire company rose 85.9% to $611 million
  • Growth primarily due to growing sales of equipment for nuclear power plants
  • Operating profit up 6.2% to 164.8 billion yen
  • Expecting net profit of 120 billion on sales of 6.7 trillion yen for fiscal year

Toshiba announces sale of its MFP with erasable toner:

  • The system includes the eSTUDIO306LP MPF with blue toner, and the RD30 erasing unit
  • Sold to Mountain View Residential and Respite Services of Wales, England.
  • Will be used to product training materials

Xerox reports on its earnings:

  • Document Technology division (MFPs, PPS & printers) total revenue down 8% to $2.2 billion
  • Color A4 MFP unit sales down 9% from last quarter
  • B/W A4 MFP unit sales down 25%
  • B/W production print unit sales down 19%
  • Color printer unit sales up 9%
  • Color A3 MFP unit sales flat
  • Color production print unit sales up 12%
  • Total revenue of $5 billion down 3%
  • Services revenue up 1% to $2.7 billion (legacy ACS)

Xerox announces partnership for MPS:

Ricoh announced PPS contract win:

  • Sold Ricoh Pro C901s with EFI Fiery production color system to Allegro Copy & Print of Lafayette, CA
  • Will be used to produce flyers, postcards, brochures for real estate vertical
  • Some output to be UV coated
  • Averaging 90,000 impressions between service calls
  • “We were impressed that Ricoh reached out to understand where out problems and concerns were. More importantly, the team wanted to know where our vision was. Ricoh announces joint “Tailgate” event with Xante’:

  • The first ever “Ricoh/Xante Technology Tailgate” event was held at Xante’ headquarters in Mobile, Alabama
  • Allows consumers to see production print related technology from both companies
  • Demonstrations included production color, production b/w, envelope printing, heavyweight media handling, wide format and cross media
  • Ricoh units were driven by Xante’s iQueue Universal Workflow system

Ricoh testing new wearable technology at DHL:

  • Uses smart glasses with augmented reality technology
  • Being tested in DHL warehouse in the Netherlands
  • “vision picking” system for warehouse employees to increase employee efficiency by 25%

Ricoh solution receives reliability award:

  • Won the kCura Orange-level Relativity Best in Service recognition for outstanding customer service
  • Award for legal review solution that provides attorneys a cloud environment for instant document review

Intel reports growing sales of high end PCs:

  • Intel’s vPro processors account for 20% of the chipmaker’s corporate PC business
  • Part of recovery in PC industry is driven by consumers buying low end laptop computers
  • The vPro processors, which are more profitable for Intel than many of its other PC chips, are increasing in sales due to growing sales of high end desktop PCs to replace older units via company technology refresh
  • “We’re growing at double digits from 2014 over 2013″. There are 100 million vPros installed in business today.”; stated Tom Garrison, Intel VP and General Manager

DMS provider reports record growth:

  • eFileCabinet of Lehi, Utah, reported 108% revenue growth
  • now has 11,000 customers and 149,000 users
  • focus on accounting, finance, insurance, healthcare and government verticals
  • now integrates with SalesForce CRM

Sharp nearing agreement to sell solar unit:

  • attempting to sell its Recurrent Energy Solar Unit to raise cash
  • Sharp had acquired the San Francisco, CA company in 2010 for $305 million
  • “Sharp is considering various options for Recurrent including sale of the company, but nothing has been decided at this point; “; stated Miyuki Nakayama, Sharp spokesperson.

Sharp’s cost to insure debt increases:

  • The Nikkei newspaper reports that cost to insure Sharp’s debt against non-payment jumped 150 basis points last week to 475 basis points
  • Dramatic cost increase came after last week’s report that company would again report a loss
  • “When the company is in the midst of restructuring, flipping from a profit forecast to a loss is quite a blow; “said Mana Nakazora, chief credit analyst for BNP Paribas SA of Japan.

Sharp provides info on its copier division earnings:

  • Business Products Group grew 3.9% worldwide in first half of fiscal year
  • Operating income of 15.9 billion yen, down 1%
  • MFP/printer group sales increased 31% through 9/2014

Sharp wins contract at University:

  • Won contract from Caldwell University of Caldwell, NY
  • Contract included 35 interactive AQUOS large HD LCD displays
  • Also includes more than 30 other Sharp LCD displays
  • Replaced old screen and projector technology

Kyocera (aka Kyoto Ceramic Company) announced it signed contract with Rogue Wave Software for data security:

  • Company will provide its Klocwork software with static code analysis to identify and fix security vulnerabilities
  • “After evaluating several tools, we realize that Klocwork is the only tool that is scalable enough to analyze large sizes of code, covering both security and quality. Its ability to identify defects in the early stages of development via the Desktop can certainly help us reduce the cost of defects.”; stated Katsuji Furushige, Kyocera Deputy Senior Manager.

Canon reports on its earnings:

  • Predicting group profit increase of 2% in 2015
  • Expect group sales to increase 5% to 3.9 trillion yen in 2015
  • Last quarter’s operating profit up to $835 million
  • Unit sales of compact digital cameras expected to drop 14% to 7.8 million
  • Revenue in Europe down 3%
  • Color MFP sales up 17% in last quarter
  • B/W MFP sales down 7%
  • Expects gains in imaging and office segments “counting on push to expand sales of color MFPs”
  • In regards to MFP sales in 2015, “making good progress in talks on possible equipment contracts with major multinationals”; stated Toshizo Tanaka, Canon’s CRO.

  • Sold a Canon imagePRESS C700 production color system
  • Acquired by Lucknow’s Crest in City of Nawabs, India
  • Will be used to produce magazines
  • “We provide the best printing quality with a resolution of 2400x2400dpi”

Microsoft to launch solution for legal vertical:

  • Company will a product called “Matter Center” offering document management for law firms
  • Will integrate Office 365 and OneDrive for storing/retrieving case files from the cloud
  • Microsoft also purchased Equivio, a company that provides advanced analytics for eDiscovery data, including de-duping
  • In addition, purchased Revolution Analytics, which provides predictive analytics for organizing and analyzing large amounts of data

Hewlett Packard announced PPS win:

  • Won contract from Bridgeport National Bindery in Agawam, MA, a commercial printer
  • Placed T230 color inkjet web press, Indigo 7600 and Indigo W7250 production color systems
  • Will be used for print on demand book printing

Hewlett Packard executive sells shares:

  • Henry Gomez, HP’s Executive VP, announced he sold 30,968 shares
  • Sold for average price of $40.01 for total sale of $1,239,029

HP predicts huge opportunity in 2015:

  • HP launched Operation Crescendo, a promo to take advantage of Microsoft’s end of support for servers running Windows Server 2003 operating system in 2015
  • HP believes that it can capture $1 billion in sales from upgrade opportunities

IBM comments on upcoming layoffs:

  • Responding to reports that the company may layoff up to 26% of its workforce (112,000 employees), the company disputed the number, but did admit a layoff was coming
  • Expected to layoff “several thousand” employees, according to company spokesperson
  • Will take a $600 million restructuring charge

FASTSIGNS Secures $15 million:

Hershey’s announces permanent 3D printer:

  • Company plans to install a permanent 3D chocolate printer at their world headquarters in Pennsylvania

One copier dealer buys another:

  • Impact Networking, with 12 locations in Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, announced it has acquired NorthShore Business Technology
  • NorthShore has locations in Kenosha, WI, Rockford, IL and Peru, IL
  • CEO of combined company is Frank Cucco
  • Purchase price not announced
  • “We have an aggressive growth plan of becoming a $100 million company by 2017”, stated Mr. Cucco.

New EHR rules from feds being proposed:

  • The CMS (Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services) announced plans to shorten the 2015 EHR reporting period to 90 days
  • Change the hospital EHR reporting to be calendar year

Feds post standings for EHR users:

  • The ONC (Office of National Coordinator) stated that 88% of hospitals has attested so far for meeting Meaningful Use rules to receive fed stimulus funds to help pay for their EHRs
  • April, 2015 is due date for hospitals
  • For clinics, only 15% have attested so far with due date of 2/28/2015.

Medsphere wins $15 million contract:

  • Contract to support and enhance RPMS, an ambulatory EHR version of the VA Hospital’s VistA system
  • Originally developed by the Indian Health Services
  • OpenVista Population Health is Medsphere’s new enhancement that runs on Windows

Cerner announces contract win:

  • Announced it won 10 year EHR contract from University Medical Center Health System
  • Install includes team of 50 employees from the IDN

Epic wins “Best in KLAS 2014” awards from KLAS Research:

  • Won for overall software suite, acute care EMR, HIE, patient accounting, patient portal, surgery management
  • Lab system, and physician practice vendor winner as well

Einstein Healthcare blames losses on EHR:

  • The bonds of the medical center in Pennsylvania were downgraded due to financial losses
  • One of reasons given is a drop in employee productivity caused by implementation of new EHR from Cerner.

Siemens makes changes to management:

  • Bernd Montag replaced Hermann Requardt as new CEO of Healthcare division
  • Michael Sen is CFO

Hyland announced ECM contract win:

  • Implemented its OnBase ECM (enterprise content management) at Thrifty White Pharmacy

Hyland wins KLAS award:

Health IT Outcomes publishes result of survey:

  • Clinical documentation improvement (CDI) made list of top ten concerns for 2015 for the first time
  • 27% rank CDI as top priority
  • For every hour of patient care, there is an associated 30 minutes or more of paperwork
  • For every hour in emergency room, one hour of paperwork for each hour of patient care
  • Medicare patients admitted to the ER have to sign 8 different Medicare forms
  • Every test ordered by a physician requires a separate government form to prove the necessity of the test
  • Every Medicare patient requires staff to complete a 30 item Medicare Secondary Payer questionnaire

HIPAA/Data Security update:

  • California Pacific Medical Center notified 844 patients that a pharmacist employee had been inappropriately snooping on PHI during last year.
  • Sunglo Home Health Services of Texas notified an unknown number of patients that their PHI were exposed after an employee’s laptop computer was stolen from a vehicle.
  • According to the Boston Globe newspaper, the state of Massachusetts broke HIPAA regulations when it sent 6800 patients an email approving them, based on their medical condition, for enrollment in the state’s medical marijuana program
  • The Saint Louis County Department of Health in Missouri, notified an unknown number of patients that their PHI may have been emailed to the personal email address of an employee.
  • Peter’s Health Partners notified an unknown number of patients that their PHI may have been exposed after a manager’s smartphone was stolen.
  • Quocira published results of research on print security:
    • 70% admit they have experienced a print-related data breach
    • 20% do not know if any breaches occur
    • 84% of public sector vertical executives have had a breach
    • 75% of retail vertical execs have had a breach
    • 51% of finance vertical execs have had breach
    • 20% have deployed some form of pull printing
    • 27% plan on acquiring pull printing solution in 2015
