Toshiba erasable toner copier
– Toshiba’s copier division in the U.S., called Toshiba America Business Solutions (or TABS), apparently changed its mind and will launch the new version of the MFP with erasable toner
– The original model, called the eSTUDIO 306LP/RD30 System, will now be replaced by the eSTUDIO 307LP/RD301
– Toshiba announced it is “donating” 250 of the old models to various public schools in the U.S.  (for example, 6 are headed for Washington D.C.)

 
Ricoh’s website changes upset its dealers

Hewlett Packard ends program for inkjets
– HP announced it has discontinued its “Instant Ink” program for businesses
– Businesses who bought a OfficeJet Pro X color inkjet MFP, could pay a monthly fee ranging from $19.99/mo to $59.99/mo and get replacement inkjet cartridges shipped to them every month at no additional charge
– HP now only offers this program to consumers (home use)

 
Brother to emulate Epson in inkjet
– While Epson recently launched a line of color inkjet MFPs with refillable ink tanks, now Brother has made a similar announcement
– The new Brother DCP-T series will come with ink to print 5000 to 6000 pages, but instead of replacing an inkjet cartridge, customer will refill tanks using a small ink bottle
– Advertised cost per page of $0.002 for b/w and $0.008 for color based on 5% coverage per page
– Devices to sell from $170-$300 estimated

Lexmark finds new use for toner
• Company announced it will use recycled toner for pavement
• Took 9000 pounds of toner captured from old toner cartridges and used it to create “TonerPave”, an new type of asphalt used to pave a parking lot outside of Lexmark’s corporate headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky

 
Florida man caught counterfeiting
• The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Jacksonville, Florida, announced that James Steven Hall faces up to 20 years in prison for counterfeiting
• He was caught making fake $10 and $20 bills using a color MFP, and stuffing them under his mattress.

Broken copier makes news in Baltimore
• A Baltimore, Maryland city councilman, Eric Costello, is calling for changes after an MFP broke down in the finance department
• Apparently, its main function was to print real estate lien certificates, and device was down for one week, causing a backlog of more than 1000 certificates
• Mr. Costello wrote a letter “asking for the city to immediately develop a backup plan” should the device break down again
• “This impacted several of my constituents, who had to postpone their closings and scramble at the last minute to acquire all of their documents in order to close on rescheduled dates”

 
Patent troll loses in court
• In what appears to be a major win for MFP makers, the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board ruled that MPHJ’s scan patents are unpatentable.
• In last several years, MPHJ has sent numerous demand letters to various businesses claiming that the companies’ MFPs’ scan capabilities infringed upon its patents, and demanding $1000 per user for the violations.

• Projects rapid growth of 500-800 machines per year that are capable of producing 10 million pages per month that are roll-fed (continuous feed)

Sharp reveals results of retirement program
• In an effort to dramatically cut costs, the company announced an early retirement program
• As of Friday, a total of 3,234 employees have applied for the program
• The figure fell below the 3,500 voluntary redundancies the struggling major consumer electronics maker targeted.
• The company will log about ¥24.3 billion costs for the program, including retirement allowances, as a special loss for July-September.
• Sharp, based in Osaka, announced in May plans to shed about 5,000 employees, or about 10 percent of its global workforce.
• As part of the plan, the company invited staffers in Japan to apply for voluntary retirement between July 27 and Aug. 4. The applicants will quit Sharp on Sept. 30.

 

• The personnel reduction will help the company cut its fixed costs by about ¥15 billion for the current business year through March 2016.

• HHC had previously fired CIO Bert Robles, and 9 others
• EHR contract was awarded to Epic in January 2013 at an announced price of $302 million, but costs have now reached $764 million

• Epic’s after the sale software license fees are $303 million.
